This project was the result of a continued material exploration of concrete, and the desire to push that research to a piece of furniture with demanding structural constraints. In order to cast the upper portion of the chair as a single piece, the tensile strength of the concrete became very important, as well minimizing the thickness of the slab to reduce the overall weight of the chair.
The concrete slab was poured with a custom mix based on a series of tests to optimize tensile strength through fiberglass reinforcement.
