Designed to appear asymmetrical and seemingly not functional, the spinning top takes advantage of three different materials: purple heart, walnut, and brass. Each material has a drastically different density, any layering these densities maximizes the duration of its spin. Embedding a ring of brass ball bearings within a layer of dense purple heart wood increases the moment of inertia and lowers the center of mass, thus achieving spins of just under 3 minutes.
